History of New Richmond Kiwanis Club

Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915. In the early years, Kiwanis clubs focused on business networking, but even then, members were serving the needs of the poor. By 1919, the organization had changed its focus from business to service. In November 1919, the Kiwanis Club of New Richmond was born when the newly formed group elected temporary officials. Now, 95 years later, Kiwanis has become a fixture of the New Richmond community and still runs many programs that serve the community and those who live in it. Since its inception, the Kiwanis Club of New Richmond has been actively involved with the advancement of the community, including helping to bring Friday Canning Company to New Richmond and helping with the construction of Holy Family Hospital (now Westfields) as well as helping with the construction of shelters in Mary Park, early installation of lights on Main Street and pushing for the city to develop a plan to pave community streets. Today, Kiwanis sponsors Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturing, Key Club and students for leadership training. Since 1958, the New Richmond Kiwanis Club has chartered Troop 9460 (previously called 460) to provide Scouting adventures to New Richmond, Wisconsin, area youth. Scouting in New Richmond dates back earlier than 1958. In fact, the first known Eagle Scout from New Richmond was in 1932.
